"Heihe River Basin high spatial and temporal resolution on future climate change scenarios simulation and its uncertainty assessment", a major research program of The National Natural Science Foundation of China under the framework of “Integrated Study of Eco-hydrological Processes in the Heihe River Basin”(key research program of The National Natural Science Foundation of China, referred to as “Heihe River Program”), held its kick-off meeting on March 27, 2015 at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS). More than 50 participants from Chinese National Natural Science Foundation Earth Sciences Division, Institute of Atmospheric Physic of CAS, Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research of CAS, The Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute of CAS, Institute of Remote Sensing Applications of CAS, Beijing Normal University, Peking University, Wuhan University, Nanjing University and Lanzhou University attended this meeting.
The meeting was chaired by Prof. Ma Zhuguo, Director of Key Lab of Key Laboratory of Regional Climate-Environment for Temperate East Asia (RCE-TEA) of CAS. On behalf of Institute of Atmospheric Physic of CAS, Prof. Lu Riyu, deputy director of IAP, said that the Institute will provide full support to related project of “Integrated Study of Eco-hydrological Processes in the Heihe River Basin”, and to ensure successful implementation of this project.

Dr. Xiong Zhe, the project leader for the project, made a detailed introduction on the project background, research objectives, research contents, technology roadmap, research scheme, research annual plans, expected research results and preliminary research work has been carried out so far. He also briefly drew the overall implementation schedule of the project. There are three core tasks of this integrated research project: (1) using existing satellite remote sensing, meteorological and hydrological observations provide validation data precision and high spatial and temporal resolution for “Heihe River Program” (2) using statistical downscaling and dynamic downscaling to get high spatial and temporal resolution of the data over the past 30 years and to analysis performance and uncertainty of the Models; (3) developing statistical downscaling and dynamical downscaling model for the Heihe River Basin, and carrying out climate change scenario simulation and uncertainty assessment over of the Heihe River Basin under global climate change scenarios for the next 50 years.
During the discussion session, project science committee members raised numbers of key advices and suggestions for the implementation of the project. Prof. Huijun Wang, academician of CAS, pointed out that the project might focus on the first two tasks mentioned above and with supplement of future scenarios. Prof. Wang suggested carrying out parallel study of multiple regional climate model dynamical downscaling in Heihe River Basin, and improving the reliability of the simulation results, and he also gave some new ideas for RIEMS 2.0 developed by RCE-TEA. Prof. Xia Jun from Wuhan University, said that the project is combination of atmospheric, ecological and hydrological aspects, which should rely on the accuracy of hydrological model presenting precipitation simulation on different time scales, and the project should also note that the precipitation estimation and validation needs to be strengthened in the regions where do not have any observation stations or rare of stations. Prof. Fu Bojie (academician of CAS), Dr. SONG Changqing, director and deputy director and of Earth Science Division of NSFC, emphasized on linkage of this project with other “Heihe River Program” projects and clearly defined the importance of ecological and hydrological studies of the project contributing to the other related “Heihe River Program” projects. The project should be history-based, supplemented by estimates of future scenarios, make full use of observational data out of “Heihe River Program”, strengthen regional models inter-comparison and localization research, carry out multi-model inter-comparison and inspection, provide high spatial and temporal resolution, high-accuracy meteorological driving field for “Heihe River Program”.
As a conclusion of the discussion session, Prof. Ma and Dr. Xiong again expressed gratitude to the experts and researchers involved in this NSFC project, and emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation with other “Heihe River Program” project, and will try to full effort to make jointly contribute to “Heihe River Program”.
Dr. Xiong chaired the afternoon session of this kick-off meeting. Guided by the advices and recommendations raised by science committee in the morning session, key members of the project team discussed the specific technical details of the project and milestone of the main research steps in the year 2015.
